Genticorum with the Touring Group at the Young Tradition Festival

May 11 at 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

$20

With Juno and ADISQ nominations, and four Canadian Folk Music Awards, Genticorum is one of the leading groups in Quebec’s traditional music scene. The concert also features an opening act by the 20 teen performers of the Young Tradition Touring Group.

This year’s Young Tradition Festival includes concerts at Contois Auditorium: World-renowned Nepali Sarangi player Shyam Nepali’s band Himalayan Dreams will perform Friday night, and the well-known Quebecois trad band Genticorum will play Saturday night, with an opening act by the 20 teen performers of the Young Tradition Touring Group. Young musicians and dancers will perform alongside their teachers Saturday morning at the Burlington Farmers Market during our Student/Mentor Showcase. Performances will include Burundian dancing, Folk fiddling, Tibetan singing, Nepali Sarangi, and more. On Sunday all-ages will have an opportunity to join in the fun at a family-friendly jam session and contra dance at Contois Auditorium. The festival’s programming also includes free performances for students at Burlington’s Integrated Arts Academy and residents at the Converse Home.

About Genticorum: With Juno and ADISQ nominations, and four Canadian Folk Music Awards, GENTICORUM is one of the leading groups in Quebec’s traditional music scene. Pascal Gemme (fiddle) and Yann Falquet (guitar), the two founding members of the trio are also individually recognized for their solid contribution to the traditional music scene. They have been joined since 2015 by multi-instrumentalist and composer Nicholas Williams (flute, accordion); the pleasure these three musicians have in playing and creating together is palpable, both on stage and on record.

In twenty-two years, the trio has carved out a place for itself on the international traditional, folk and Celtic music scene. The group’s six albums and four EPs have received critical acclaim in Canada and abroad and have helped them develop a solid career. Known for their energy and stage presence, but also for their refined and precisely executed arrangements, the group has already performed nearly two thousand concerts in twenty countries.

The trio has performed on many renowned stages and has been programmed in several prestigious world/folk festivals, such as Celtic Connections in Scotland, the Tonder Folk Festival in Denmark, the Vijlandi Folk Festival in Estonia, the International Festival of Chihuahua in Mexico, the Independent Music Festival of Alexandria in Egypt, as well as in Malaysia, Israel, and Australia.

About the Touring Group: The Touring Group is an auditioned group of teen players, singers, and dancers who rehearse together from October to May, before embarking on a tour in June. This Young Tradition Vermont at Vermont Folklife program nurtures youth involvement in traditional music and dance, ensuring that young people have opportunities to be inspired and inspiring, to learn and teach, to perform, and to serve the communities they live in and visit.

This year the Touring Group, supported by Artist Leaders Pascal Gemme and Véronique Plasse, will spend a week in June touring Quebec, after performing at multiple locations around Vermont this spring.
