Join BCA to celebrate the opening of “Outstanding: Contemporary Self-Taught Art,” “Hyunsuk Erickson: Thingumabob Society,” and “Faith Ringgold: Jazz Stories,” as well as the announcement of the 2023 Diane Gabriel Visual Artist Award winner.
“Outstanding” features the work of eight regional self-taught artists reshaping contemporary artistic discourse as they explore unconventional paths to creative expression.
Hyunsuk Erickson’s whimsical installation “Thingumabob Society” merges sculpture and craft traditions to create an imaginative and hopeful space that invites us to collectively reflect on relationships between nature, culture, and ourselves.
In conjunction with BCA’s Jazz Lab programming, Faith Ringgold draws on personal and collective history with an artistic practice that ranges from quilts and performance, to paintings and printmaking. Begun in 2004, the artist’s series Jazz Stories celebrates the music that has provided her with a lifetime of creative inspiration. This focus exhibition features four works from the series in silkscreen, serigraph, and acrylic on paper.
The 2023 exhibition year is presented by Mascoma Bank. Sponsored in part by Leunig’s Bistro & Café and the Maslow Family Foundation. Hospitality sponsors, Lake Champlain Chocolates, Farrell Distributing, and Prophecy Wines. Burlington City Arts is supported in part by The Vermont Arts Council & the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Jazz Stories” is presented as part of Jazz Lab. Courtesy of ACA Galleries, NY.
