Project Description

Grasse River Heritage, a small nonprofit organization located in northern New York, seeks large-scale sculptures for a temporary installation in Willow Island Sculpture Garden, an outdoor art gallery along the Grasse River in Canton, NY. The organization’s volunteer sculpture garden committee is looking for high quality sculpture to borrow and display outdoors for a period of approximately two years starting in the spring of 2024. The organization encourages works of art with themes and/or materials that reflect life in the North Country or that are likely to interest North Country residents. Sculptures by multiple artists will be selected and exhibited together in this public sculpture garden.

Introduction:

Grasse River Heritage is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the Grasse River to a central place in the life of the community of Canton, NY, a rural area in the northern region of upstate New York. The organization oversees the maintenance of neighboring parks along the Grasse River including Heritage Park, Dwight Church Park, and Willow Island Sculpture Garden, all of which are free and open to the public year-round for visiting and various programs. Willow Island Sculpture 

Garden was established in 2016 and has featured installations by numerous established artists over the years. The exhibitions rotate every 2 years.

The Site: 

Willow Island Sculpture Garden is located in a grassy area on Willow Island in the Grasse River and along Route 11 (Main Street), a busy road that runs through Canton, NY. The scenic location is just under an acre. The garden is accessible by car or from the sidewalk along the road. A parking lot is located in close proximity to the sculpture garden for convenient parking.

Sculpture Requirements 

Sculptures to be displayed in the sculpture garden must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be able to be displayed outdoors. 
  • Must remain on view for the 2 year exhibition.
  • Must be retrieved by the artist at the end of the installation period. 
  • Transportation to and from the site must be arranged by the artist.
    • Members of our volunteer sculpture committee will provide assistance for the installation and deinstallation of the work. 

Funding/Budget 

In addition to insurance, we will offer a one-time payment of $2,500 to each selected artist, which will be disbursed to the artist upon delivery of the artwork.

Artist Eligibility

This call for proposals is open to all artists willing and able to independently transport their work to Canton, NY for installation in Willow Island Sculpture Garden. 

Application Materials 

Artists should include the following materials in their proposal:

  • A detailed description of their sculpture including formal elements such size, color, and materials as well as information about process, inspiration, etc.
  • An artist’s statement
  • A short statement of interest describing why you are interested in this project
  • A concept drawing of a planned sculpture and/or photo of the completed sculpture
    • A more detailed drawing may be requested if your sculpture is selected
  • 2-4 photos of past work samples
  • Contact information (email, phone number, and address)
  • Resume (optional)

Project Timeline 

  • Proposal submission deadline December 1, 2023
  • Selected artists will be notified by January 26, 2024
  • Payment of $2,500 upon delivery of artwork
  • Installation completed by June 15, 2024
  • Sculptures on view to the public through June 15, 2026
  • Deinstallation no later than June 30, 2026
