Arts News for June 20, 2019
Animate, Rejuvenate, Improve

Creative placemaking animates public and private spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability and public safety. the work also brings diverse people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired. These are conclusions outlined in the white paper Creative Placemaking; the Arts Council supports these same ideas. And, with the help of three placemakers in Vermont, we dig in to the how and why of the activity in this week's featured story, What Placemakers Say.

Burlington City Arts Wins Creative Economy Award

Burlington City Arts (BCA) received the prestigious Organizational Leadership Award from the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA). The award was presented at the Creative Communities Exchange held June 6 and 7 in Montpelier.

BCA was honored for the exceptional leadership and cumulative work of the organization on behalf of Burlington'--and Vermont's--creative economy. One of the first municipal departments in the nation to be designated as cultural planner, BCA has successfully integrated the arts into planning for economic development, education, and urban design.

Congratulations to Executive Director Doreen Kraft, Assistant Director Sarah Katz, and the entire BCA team. Your efforts have strengthened Vermont's creative economy, enlivened Burlington's downtown, and provided arts experiences to thousands of Vermont residents and visitors for more than thirty-five years. Well done!

Make Music Day!

Some of the Make Music Montpelier performers are: (top l to r) Mikahely, Anni Paisley, Bryan Blanchette, and (bottom) Chaque Fois!
On Friday, music will fill parks, street corners, front porches, and Montpelier's Main Street. All over Vermont, people will celebrate Make Music Day.

Vermont Make Music Day is part of an annual worldwide celebration that takes place on June 21 in more than one hundred and twenty countries and one thousand cities across the globe.

Thanks to a generous grant from Montpelier Alive, with funds from the Montpelier Downtown Improvement District, the Vermont Arts Council is hosting a stage at City Hall Plaza in Montpelier. The lineup includes The Standard Deviations, Bruce Colgrove, and Kick 'em Jenny. The event will get underway at noon, with a toe-tapping, foot-stomping set of Cajun music by Chaque Fois!

Find out where to hear music in your community.
#VTArts251 Challenge

June 21 marks the first day of summer and the launch of a new #VTArts251 campaign. From the beginning of summer to the start of winter, we intend to highlight the arts in every town and village in Vermont. That means more than one town per day (did you know that Vermont has exactly 251 towns?).

Help us reach this goal! As you get out and about this summer, take moment to snap a pic of the arts in your community (or one you happen to visit). It could be a work of public art, a town square concert, a plein air artist, or someone strumming a guitar on a front porch.

Share your photo on social media using #VTArts251, or send it to us. We'll post it and include it in ArtMail. Don't forget to include your name, the name of the artist or group, and--of course--the town.

The Vermont Arts Council is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts , which requires a 1:1 match from the Vermont State Legislature. Council grants, programs, and statewide arts promotion would not be possible without the critical funding provided by these government agencies.
