Arts News for January 9, 2020

Jump Start in Full Swing

As 2019 wrapped up, so did another round of JumpStart--a business training program for makers co-organized by Burlington's Generator and LaunchVT and sponsored by the Arts Council. Mentoring, technical training, and free membership at a maker space support new entrepreneurs in rolling out creative businesses.

The last ten-week session culminated in a shopping event dubbed Holiday Humbug. Artists confidently sold their jewelry, hats, clothing, and knives that evening. This week's featured story, Just Add Savvy, describes the program and the experience.
Welcome Sean

The Arts Council board is delighted to welcome Sean Clute as the newest trustee.

Sean is a multimedia artist who experiments with video, sound, and performance; you might find him in a suspended pod, a geodesic dome, or a cacophonic sonic environment. He co-directs the intermedia performance group Double Vision, and directs MARS (the Media Arts Research Studio) at Northern Vermont University-Johnson, where he serves as assistant professor of fine arts. When he is not creating art or teaching, he is busy learning to cross-country ski.

The Council's board is composed of eighteen trustees from across the state, one of whom is appointed by the governor.

Thank You, Kira!

At the end of December, the Arts Council staff and board said a reluctant farewell to Kira Bacon, who has been on staff for seven years, most recently serving as communications director.

Among her many accomplishments, Kira brought new energy and fresh artistic perspectives to the Council's Spotlight Gallery and Sculpture Garden. She also conceived the I am a Vermont Artist interview series, inviting a diverse range of artists to share reflections about how living in Vermont has shaped their artistic practices. Kira's passion and talents strengthened and enriched our work, and we will miss her.

Although she has left the Arts Council, Kira is not going far. You might just see her on the slopes at Sugarbush!
Makers at School? Yes, Please

If you're a creative with experience in K-12 classrooms and/or makerspaces, we want to hear from you. The Arts Council is accepting applications to its Teaching Artist Roster.

Everyone on the roster has a passion for artistry. They also have the ability to activate creativity in others--in both arts and nonarts classrooms. The Artist in Schools Grant program supports school residencies throughout Vermont; the artists employed must be on the roster.

Learning through the arts awakens young minds in ways other modalities might not, whether making videos, graphics, ceramics, crankies, or puppets. One school administrator reported, "We value risk taking as an attribute and this residency encouraged our students to put themselves out there." Teachers have also noted they value experimental learning, critical thinking, and creativity because "These attributes represent a broad range of what we strive to become as citizens." This is meaningful work.

The Vermont Arts Council is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, which requires a 1:1 match from the Vermont State Legislature. Council grants, programs, and statewide arts promotion would not be possible without the critical funding provided by these government agencies.
