Vermont's New Poet Laureate

Mary Ruefle. Photo by Matt Valentine.
Bennington poet Mary Ruefle was appointed poet laureate by Governor Phil Scott on October 28. The governor welcomed Mary to her post and paid tribute to the outgoing laureate, Chard deNiord, at a gathering in the Arts Council office.

In his remarks, Governor Scott noted "This is my first opportunity as governor to appoint our poet laureate and I am honored and pleased that Mary Ruefle has accepted the position. During the rigorous selection process led by a panel of experts in the literary arts, Mary was called 'one of the best poets in America.' Panel members commended Mary's originality, imaginative writing, and wit. They agreed that she is a poet 'at the height of her powers,' making her nomination as Vermont's poet laureate in 2019 timely and appropriate."

Congratulations, Mary!

Giant Asian Girl from the Giantess Collection by Misoo.
From choreography to spoken word and watercolor painting, I AM . . . reflects the creative inspiration of twenty-seven individuals and explores what it means to be a Vermont artist. The show culminates the first year of the I am a Vermont Artist series, which documents how artists' works reflect their experiences of ethnicity, gender identity, religion, disability, or age.

The exhibit opens Friday, November 8, with an artists' reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Vermont Arts Council is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, which requires a 1:1 match from the Vermont State Legislature. Council grants, programs, and statewide arts promotion would not be possible without the critical funding provided by these government agencies.
