The T. W. Wood Gallery at 46 Barre St in Montpelier, Vermont at the Center for Arts and Learning is pleased to announce the opening of “Close to the Cloth”, a textile exhibit featuring the work of Barbara Bendix, Karen Henderson, Stephanie Krauss, Skye Livingston, Kate Ruddle and Neysa Russo. The Gallery has assembled a varied group of Vermont fiber artists that showcase a range of techniques and sensibilities toward textiles. The work ranges from pieces seated firmly in traditional craft to conceptual work that uses fiber as a vehicle, and work that straddles the divide. “Close to the Cloth” will be on view in the Group Exhibitions Hall.

Reception
There will be an opening reception on Thursday March 7th from 5:00-7:00 pm. The reception is an opportunity to meet many of the artists and enjoy refreshments and purchase local art at affordable prices. Also on exhibit are works from the Gallery’s permanent collection. The Gallery is located at 46 Barre Street at the Center for Arts and Learning in Montpelier, VT.

Demo Day – Saturday - March 23rd – 1-3 pm.
Artists will talk about their work and share textile techniques from their work. Skye Livingston will give a demonstration on natural dyeing. Kate Ruddle will give a demo on fabric manipulation to include such techniques as creating three-dimensional forms with pleating and flounces. Thomas Waterman Wood – The Master Copies

Thomas Waterman Wood – The Master Copies
Description:

October 30, 2018 – June 1, 2019
The T.W. Wood Gallery announces an exhibit of Thomas Waterman Wood’s Master Copies.
Wood painted portraits across the US and Canada which lead to a European trip in 1858. Following fashion, Wood copied paintings in Europe to learn from the masters; such as Rembrandt and Turner. Wood made three additional trips and brought these paintings back to Vermont. In 19th Century Montpelier, these paintings were akin to an art history textbook, as many Americans wouldn’t have had access to European paintings. We invite you to visit the gallery, see these paintings’ scope, and explore how they differ from the originals.

Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 12:00-4:00 pm and by appointment. The Gallery is located at 46 Barre Street at the Center for Arts and Learning in Montpelier, VT. For more information contact the Gallery’s Director Ginny Callan at 802-262-6035, info@twwoodgallery.org or visit www.twwoodgallery.org

Ice Shanties: Fishing, People & Culture

Ice Shanties: Fishing, People & Culture
Description:

Ice Shanties: Fishing, People & Culture
Photographs by Federico Pardo / Interviews Vermont Folklife Center
On display through Summer 2019

Ice Shanties is an exhibition about the structures, people and culture of ice fishing seen through the lens of Vermont-based Colombian photographer Federico Pardo. Pardo’s large format color photographs of ice shanties at “The Meadows” in Brattleboro, Vermont are paired with audio reflections from the shanty owners drawn from interviews by the Vermont Folklife Center.

While Pardo’s shanty portraits provide a window into the material culture of ice fishing, the shanty owner interviews are an opportunity to engage with the human side—the personal, familial and recreational culture—of this winter activity.
