The Taming of the Shrew

The Taming of the Shrew Vermont Arts 2018
Description:

When the clever and fiery Kate meets the clamorous and entrepreneurial Petruchio, sparks fly! Shakespeare’s delirious take on gender roles explores marriage as a commodity and love itself as theatre. One of Shakespeare’s most talked about comedies, The Taming of the Shrew is sure to entertain, disrupt, and leave us thinking. The Vermont Shakespeare Festival’s production of The Taming of the Shrew, a modern take on the 400 year-old comic battle of the sexes, will be performed August 7-9 at 6 p.m. on the Circus Lawn at the Shelburne Museum. Tickets are on sale at FlynnTix https://www.flynntix.org/. Tickets will be sold at the door as available. Bring chairs, blanket, a picnic and the family and revel in one of the Bard’s funniest plays. Doors open at 5 p.m.. Now in its 14th season of producing professional theatre, Vermont Shakespeare Festival brings wit, intelligence, and power-packed action to the stage with an extraordinary company of actors from the region. Crystal Wagner: Traverse

Crystal Wagner: Traverse
Description:

Multi-disciplinary artist Crystal Wagner transforms organic and biomorphic designs into colorful prints, sculptures, and sprawling installations comprised of bursting colors and organic forms. Her two and three-dimensional work boasts bright neon hues consisting of distinctive, intricate circular patterns suggestive of the natural world. The artist employs a hybrid approach to printmaking and sculpture, in which she incorporates her screenprints with recycled consumer materials, such as disposable tablecloths, to create textural pieces that are as expansive as they are voluminous. Wagner will create an immense site-specific installation in BCA’s first-floor gallery that grows from floor to ceiling and emerges outside to meander across the exterior façade. This exhibition will be Wagner’s first to simultaneously incorporate interior and exterior space within one work.

Crystal Wagner: Traverse is presented by Leunig's.

Check website for operating hours. Admission is always free at the BCA Center.

Artist’s Artists: The Way You Look

Artist’s Artists: The Way You Look
Description:

Tim Simonds and Ashish Avikunthak
Lower Level Gallery, BCA Center
August 10 – October 7, 2018
Artist Reception: Friday, August 10 • 6-7:30 p.m.

Guest Curator Talk: Pete Moran
Wednesday, September 26 • 6-7:30 p.m.

In this inaugural installment of the Artist’s Artists series, Vermont-based artist and guest curator Pete Moran brings the acute, time-based work of filmmaker Ashish Avikunthak into contact with Tim Simonds’s intimate and careful sculpture. The light from Avikunthak’s early, ritual based films, spills off the screen into the immediate, encompassing world of Simonds’s wall-to-wall carpet punctuated with bleached vegetables and stainless steel. Here, a mystery can become its own answer, and an experience can become its own meaning. As we see, smell, hear and feel these artworks, we are left to wonder not just how we look at art, but how different ways of looking can change how we perceive the world.

The Artist’s Artists series offers insights into contemporary art by inviting Vermont artists to guest curate intriguing and challenging work that has influenced their creative practice.

Visual Analogies

Visual Analogies
Description:

VISUAL ANALOGIES: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF VANESSA KOTOVICH AND PENN CHAN
Roth Gallery, BCA Center
August 10 – October 7, 2018
Artist Reception: Friday, August 10, 6-7:30 p.m.

Visual Analogies features the photography of two recent graduates, Penn Chan and Vanessa Kotovich, who explore themes of growth and decay; myth and reality; and the beautiful and grotesque. Penn Chan captures the beauty of destructive forces and nature’s resiliency in his series, Second Growth, while Vanessa Kotovich immerses the viewer in the surreal beauty and lush decay of idyllic sanctuaries in her series Natura. Representing a new generation of contemporary photographers, Chan and Kotovich embrace the discomfort of the world and explore the extremes in creating imagery that is as unsettling as it is beautiful.

Time: 8/10/18 6:00pm - 10/7/18 5:00pm
Location: 135 Church Street, Burlington
