Artist Demo: Beyond Camel Girths by Rebecca Jensen

Exhibiting artist Rebecca (Becky) Jensen will reveal what ply-split braiding involves, a fiber braiding technique that originated long ago in the Middle East for making camel girths that she uses to create artwork resembling sculptural baskets. Jensen will demonstrate how she got started and share her recent work, including items on display in the SPA show, “Weaving Community: Recent Work from the Vermont Weavers Guild.

Artist Talk: Doubleweave Isn't Just Double by Susan Rockwell

Doubleweave is a process that allows for two separate layers to be woven simultaneously, for weaving double width cloth, for tubular weaving and variations, as well as double weave pickup for creative woven-in designs. Exhibiting artist Susan Rockwell will speak about how she got to double weave and the challenge of this exciting structure. She will share samples, talk about the basics of double weave and hopefully encourage those attending to look into the structure further.

Susan has fiber in her DNA, is an accomplished weaver who has been teaching many aspects of weaving for 35 years and has lived in Central Vermont for 42 years.

Heath Quartet

Known for “passionate performances that combine technical accomplishment with interpretative flair” (Strad), the acclaimed Heath Quartet—the series’ first-ever quartet in residence—returns to help us celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birth year. They present Beethoven’s entire string quartet cycle over six concerts (two each term), bookending weeklong residencies with our campus and community. The October 5 concert launches the cycle with Quartet No. 1 in F Major, op. 18.1; the “Serioso” quartet, op. 95; and Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Major, op. 130. The October 11 concert features Quartet No. 2 in G Major, op. 18.2; the second “Razumovsky” quartet, op. 59.2; and Quartet No. 15 in A Minor, op. 132. A Nelson Fund event. Reserved seating.
