Arts Calendar: Photography
West Branch Gallery is proud to present the emotive, nostalgic pigment prints of Jim Westphalen.
One can visit the same scene many times and feel different emotions each time. Why? Jim captures the fleeting light play which changes hourly, daily, seasonally, and brings us personally into the landscape and deep into our memories.
The images in this body of work were very deliberately planned and created with a particular type of light in mind, thus telling a very particular story within each image.
Inspired by painters Andrew Wyeth, A. Hale Johnson and Edward Hopper, Westphalen creates imagery in which weather, light and composition come together with a painter’s eye. These transportive images take us to a place of escape, renewing an appreciation for this beautiful land that we call Vermont.

A photography exhibit featuring the work of Marek Jagoda and Ea Maples. Ea and Marek are fine art photographers who have spent the last three years together exploring interesting places and historic buildings including many abandoned theaters throughout New England. They have documented the beautiful architecture of these theaters as well as done creative work in the mezzanines, stages, powder rooms, balconies, and foyers of these grand places that were built in a time where a great deal of attention was placed on the beauty of a space rather than just its functionality. The exhibit will also include some of their work photographing performances of Main Street Arts. The exhibit will pass through the spaces theater has occupied, the ghosts of these places, and the living soul of theater today.

This multimedia exhibition, assembled by Erika Senft Miller, Nancy Winship Milliken, and Michael Zebrowski, runs from July 5 to August 30, 2019, at the Vermont Arts Council's Spotlight Gallery. Photographs, video, sound, virtual-reality timelapse, prints, drawings, and three logs create the show. The ephemera was captured, collected, and created during the two-year exhibit in the Vermont Arts Council Sculpture Garden, SiteTime : Cordwood. Both exhibits are about exploring process and change relevant to place and time. The artists worked collaboratively to carefully document the stages and actions that composed the change. The artwork is found in this change and in the dialog the artists had in considering how to elevate a mainstay in Vermont culture, the processing of cordwood for heating a home. The opening reception will be Friday, July 12, 4 to 7 p.m.
