Thomas Waterman Wood – The Master Copies

Thomas Waterman Wood – The Master Copies

October 30, 2018 – June 1, 2019
The T.W. Wood Gallery announces an exhibit of Thomas Waterman Wood’s Master Copies.
Wood painted portraits across the US and Canada which lead to a European trip in 1858. Following fashion, Wood copied paintings in Europe to learn from the masters; such as Rembrandt and Turner. Wood made three additional trips and brought these paintings back to Vermont. In 19th Century Montpelier, these paintings were akin to an art history textbook, as many Americans wouldn’t have had access to European paintings. We invite you to visit the gallery, see these paintings’ scope, and explore how they differ from the originals.

Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 12:00-4:00 pm and by appointment. The Gallery is located at 46 Barre Street at the Center for Arts and Learning in Montpelier, VT. For more information contact the Gallery’s Director Ginny Callan at 802-262-6035, info@twwoodgallery.org or visit www.twwoodgallery.org

Awakenings - Current Work By Kate Longmaid and Tom Merwin

Awakenings - Current Work By Kate Longmaid and Tom Merwin

The T. W. Wood Gallery at 46 Barre St in the Center for Arts and Learning in Montpelier, Vermont is pleased to announce Awakenings; an exhibit featuring current work by Kate Longmaid and Tom Merwin. The T.W. Wood Gallery is honored to have their work at the gallery.

Through a contemporary approach to portraiture and still life, Kate Longmaid explores what is revealed in the intimate moments of seeing. Working in the alla prima tradition, she paints directly from life, seeking to capture a sense of immediacy, freshness, and depth in my paintings. With still life, Longmaid is drawn to subject matter that is ephemeral. Captured in fleeting moments, these paintings reflect on the transient nature and beauty of life.

Tom Merwin's painting process expresses a layering of symbol and spirituality, using nature as a doorway to the expression of existential concerns. Traveling the trails through the Kittatiny, Catskill and Green Mountains have been a continued influence and resource for Merwin. Exploring the waterfalls and sketching them on site with sumi ink and rice paper, or recreating the strata of a mountain or cliff face using layering of media, allows him to use the images as notes or tones and leave their literal meaning behind.
