"Ascent (Part One: Eulogy)" by Ryan Geary

"Ascent (Part One: Eulogy)" by Ryan Geary

Ryan Geary’s exhibition Ascent (Part One: Eulogy), a collection of 2D and 3D collages, will be on display in the Copley Common Room at River Arts January 21-March 28, 2019. An artist talk and opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 7, from 5-7pm. Free admission and refreshments, cash bar.

Ascent (Part One: Eulogy) tells the story of multiple Americas. Geary says “At once it is a story of the death of the America we have been taught to know, and the story of an America that has been enslaved, oppressed, beaten, and marginalized. It is the story of an America that is rising despite the entrenched power of its oppressors and the story of an America that is destructively flailing about in its death throes”. Through images of our past and present, images used in their historical context or just for their symbolic and emotional power, Ascent is an attempt by the artist to deconstruct the “reality” and “history” of the America he, as a white male, has known. According to Geary, it is an attempt at “scrubbing through the whitewash of history and seeing the America worthy of veneration”.

Ryan Geary is a multimedia artist currently focusing on collage. A New Jersey native, he has been assembling collages since the age of eleven. “As a child I was limited in the material I had access to so I relied on newspapers, thrown away magazines, and books from free piles.” Ryan became comfortable working within the parameters of the material on hand and as a result, current events, advertisements, and historical images are part of the recipe and inspiration for much of Geary’s work. Ryan’s work has been exhibited throughout Vermont and has also been featured in several International Collage Exhibitions in Berlin, Germany, and Sebastopol, California. He is the owner and curator of The Hive Gallery and Gifts, and lives in Waterbury with his family and two best dog friends.

Gallery open Monday-Friday and Every 1st & 3rd Sunday from 9am-4pm. Call (802) 888-1261 or visit RiverArtsVT.org for more information.

"On Making Pictures" by Thom Egan

"On Making Pictures" by Thom Egan

“On Making Pictures”, an exhibit featuring wood block prints, lithographs, and colored low reliefs by Artist Thom Egan, will be on display at the Gallery at River Arts from January 21-April 19, 2019.

A Reception & Artist Talk will be held on Thursday, February 7, from 5-7pm, and will include a brief introduction by the Artist on three topics: Art & Craft -how they differ and where they overlap; how and why the work on display is made; and art and audience – why might these pictures matter to you. Opportunity for questions and discussion will follow. Free admission and refreshments, cash bar.

When describing his work, Egan says “A focus of my work is the simultaneously complex and unified character of nature. In making these pictures; physical properties (e.g. structure, density, temperature, etc.) are related by means of process (e.g. gradation, stratification, fragmentation, synchronization, etc.). These various components are then set in an archetype (e.g. a mountain, bindings, a gate, an egg, a column, etc.). The overall aim being to effect a harmonious, if uneasy, balance which is evocative of experience. In this way the paradox (i.e. the many, the one) approaches a resolution; such that whatever the complexities involved become unified and the image rings true.”

Gallery open Monday-Friday and Every 1st & 3rd Sunday from 9am-4pm. Call (802) 888-1261 or visit RiverArtsVT.org for more information.
