BECOMING DR. RUTH

BECOMING DR. RUTH Vermont Arts 2018
Description:

"My favorite animal is the turtle...to move, it has to stick its neck out." That's the life philosophy of Dr. Ruth K. Westheimer in a nutshell.

Lost Nation Theater presents Maura O'Brien in the hilarious and moving biodrama BECOMING DR. RUTH by Mark St. Germain. The script illuminates this remarkable woman's untold story bursting with the life, honesty, and life-affirming spirit of Karola Ruth Siegel, the little girl who fled from the Nazi's and became "Dr. Ruth," America's most famous sex therapist. Almost everyone of a certain age knows Dr. Ruth Westheimer from her career as a pioneering and taboo-shattering radio and TV sex therapist with a quirky sense of humor. She said: "Why did they listen? I think people need to talk about sex and suddenty here was a little matronly woman who did. I was not threatening. And I made them laugh." At at age 90, she's still going strong!

Over the course of the one-act play, Dr. Ruth recounts her Jewish upbringing in 1930s Germany. After experiencing Kristallnacht, her parents sent her out of harm’s way on a Kindertransport to Switzerland where she spent her teen years. After WWII she learned that most of her family perished in the Holocaust. Relocating to Jerusalem, she served as a sniper for Haganah and was wounded in an explosion. The hardships kept coming but she persevered through the depravity and punishing conditions. As a single mother, she set her sights on America, determined to get an education and become a doctor.

Directed by LNT's Producing Artistic Director Kathleen Keenan; Dialect Coach Christopher Scheer; Music Designer Tim Tavcar, Scenic Designer Andrew Mannion, Lighting Designer Charlotte Seelig Costumer Shawn Sturdevarnt; Sound Designer AJ Bierschwal with Stage Management and properties by Marissa Christie, Emily Cuerdon, and Stevie De.
