ASHLEY STORROW TRIO

ASHLEY STORROW TRIO Vermont Arts 2018
Description:

Up-and-coming songwriter, Ashley Storrow’s radiant voice and thoughtfully crafted songs have quickly grabbed listeners’ attention. She began writing as a child on a farm in Western Massachusetts with a hay wagon as the stage and sheep for an audience. She has since expanded her following, ranking #2 on Reverbnation’s folk music chart in Maine, and she has shared the stage with Putnam Smith at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Emerging Artist Showcase and One Longfellow Square (2016).

Ashley released her debut CD the “Bear and the Bird” in July 2016. According to the Portland Press Herald, “The Bear and the Bird” is full of tender, poetic songs that will provoke thought, optimistic smiles and even a misty eye.” Ashley’s warmth and honesty draw you in and invite you to feel the same. “The Bear and The Bird” is a distillation of 20 years of ideas scrapped on the back of journals, textbooks, and phone recordings. The 12 songs explore tensions between living a life of responsibility vs. freedom and simplicity vs. impact as well as age old stories of love and death.

Ashley is joined by many celebrated musicians on this record including April Reed-Cox on cello, Nate Martin on upright bass, Emma Stanley on trumpet, Putnam Smith on guitar and vocal harmonies, Jud Caswell on 12 string guitar, and Charles Lester on percussion.

My mission is to write songs that respond to life emotionally as a young woman, a public servant, a daughter, a lover, an artist, and a human being with a voice. – Ashley Storrow

Festival of Mandolin Chamber Music X

Festival of Mandolin Chamber Music X Vermont Arts 2018
Description:

Led by August Watters, a Boston area teacher and composer, this festival is designed for the classical mandolin community and for concertgoers interested in classical chamber music.

The purpose of the festival is to create learning and performance opportunities for those interested in chamber music composed for mandolin and its related instruments (as well as classical guitar).

Participants will rehearse in preparation for a concert on Sunday, August 12 at 3 pm.

SPECIAL GUESTS

Aleksei Aleksandrov and Ekaterina Skliar are masters of the Russian Domra. Alex and Kate are prize-winning virtuosos of the domra, a Russian folk instrument with a rich and diverse literature. They are also masters of the American-style mandolin, and perform music drawing on classical and jazz idioms.

THE MUSIC

A great wealth of music exists for mandolin-guitar ensembles. Since most of it has been forgotten or out of the public eye for generations, it's an exciting time to be a mandolinist! FMCM provides an opportunity to explore mandolin ensemble music, from baroque to romantic and contemporary works.

THE PARTICIPANTS

FMCM is open to anyone who plays mandolin, mandola, or guitar, and reads standard notation. Music will be available for advance preparation. Guitar parts will be written in standard classical guitar format, although pick-style guitar may substitute for mandola. A violin teacher is always on staff, so violinists who wish to try mandolin are welcome.

THE PROGRAM

Participants will divide their time between ensemble rehearsals, workshops, and informal chamber music sessions. A variety of workshops will be available, addressing technique, repertoire, and theory.

THE CONCERT

The workshop will culminate in a public concert on Sunday at 3 pm. August Watters will perform with the New England Mandolin Ensemble, special guests and Festival participants. Together we'll put together a wide-ranging concert, illustrating the many sounds of the concert mandolin. Tickets for the concert may be purchased HERE.

THE FACULTY: AUGUST WATTERS

August Watters is a multi-stylistic, improvising mandolinist, composer/ arranger, and teacher in the Boston area. As a composer, performer, teacher and conductor, he is actively engaged in today’s revival of this most elegant instrument, and the advancement of its musical traditions. His work as an interpreter, improviser, composer and arranger bridges contemporary classical music, jazz, folk music traditions, and the historical concert mandolin repertoire.
