Arts Calendar: Music
“Ranky tanky” translates loosely as “get funky” in the Gullah dialect of the southeastern Sea Island region, and that’s exactly what this Charleston, SC-based quintet aims to do. They add a jazz backbone to traditional Gullah songs, from children’s game songs to ecstatic shouts to heartbreaking spirituals. Strongly infused with West African rhythms, it’s music that “makes you want to dance and sing along with hope” (Afropop Worldwide).

The Summit School of Traditional Music and Culture presents Trad Camp 2019 July 15-19! This week-long music immersion camp is perfect for kids 8-16 years old who either have a newfound interest in music, or a deep interest in furthering musicianship. Classes range from Beginner to Advanced on a variety of instruments including fiddle, guitar, ukulele, drums, songwriting, voice, and more. Budding musicians enjoy developing technique and skill on instruments they know, but are also encouraged to try something new. Our instructors are first class, recognized for both the quality of their teaching, and their performance skills.
The Trad Camp day begins at 9am with a group song or short performance, then students disperse into their different chosen classes. Mid-day lunch break includes ample time outside on the beautiful Orchard Valley Waldorf School campus in East Montpelier. Afternoon class choices include an ensemble option, where students can experience playing in a group and arranging music together. For campers who want to spend some time practicing or trying their hand at an art activity, there will always be time reserved at the end of the day. Pick-up is at 3pm, with an option for Stay and Play to accommodate longer work days. The Summit School has presented this camp for many years, and after taking one year off, has decided to offer it once again. The camp’s director, Katie Trautz, is thrilled to give children and teens an opportunity to explore music and deepen their interest in the arts.
