Mokuhanga Workshop + Lecture with Visiting Artist Patty Hudak

Stowe, Vermont – The Current is pleased to welcome artist Patty Hudak to The Current from November 10-12, 2023. On Friday, November 10, Hudak will provide a free public lecture and demonstration from 6-8pm. Then, on Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November 12, she will lead a 2-day Mokuhanga workshop from 10am-4pm. Originating in Korea and China, then refined in the Edo Period in Japan, Mokuhanga (Japanese water-based woodblock printing) is experiencing a contemporary revival as a nature-based art form. Trained in Japan, Patty Hudak will guide participants in the immersive techniques of carving and printing, using handmade brushes, Japanese paper, rice glue, gouache, and a handheld baren to carve and print two-color Mokuhanga prints. The workshop will cover the history of color in Japanese prints, and the potential of Mokuhanga as a medium for contemporary printmakers. While the Friday night lecture and demonstration is free and open to the public, workshop participation requires registering online at: https://www.thecurrentnow.org/product-page/introduction-to-mokuhanga

Patty Hudak is an artist living in Underhill VT, and has practiced Mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock printing) since 2016. Trained in Japan, she is now teaching Mokuhanga workshops throughout Vermont. She has participated 2023 Haystack Open Studio Residency; Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory in Kawaguchiko, Japan (2016, 2017, 2019), “Walking Birds’ Mountain”, Eco-residency in Sligo, Ireland (2018, 2019), and Baby Forest in Skibbereen, Ireland (2018).
