Event Series Event Series: Make a Post and Rung Stool

Make a Post and Rung Stool

July 21 at 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

$745 – $875

No woodworking experience required. In this class, you’ll learn how to make a stool from a tree!

Learn. The mechanics of this stool – post and rung joinery – were popularized by Appalachian chairmakers whose unglued work still holds tightly together hundreds of years later. We’ll aim for that! The class will start with a straight-grained log and we’ll learn how to accurately split it into chair parts using wedges and a froe. Then, we’ll shave our split parts into posts and rungs on shavehorses. Finally, by leveraging compression and expansion of material ,we’ll knock together a slight but sturdy stool frame. We’ll end the class by weaving our seats with shaker tape.

Make. Students will make a post and rung stool using hand tools.

**** Two weekends: June 29 and 30, and July 20 and 21 | 9am – 5pm | Class will break for a 1 hour lunch each day.

Cost: $743.75 members; $875 non-members (includes all materials needed to make your own post and rung stool)
What to Bring: Bring a bag lunch, or you may visit nearby downtown Brattleboro to purchase lunch.
