Theater costume design is not always about making actors shine on stage; occasionally they need to look like they inhabit a specific time period in the past. This often provides a challenge for the costume designer to research, design, and realize costumes to be used on stage. Research based on historical garments, like those in Middlebury College’s important antique clothing collection, is an essential step in this process.
