32 SOUNDS: Documentary and Soundbath

Epsilon Spires presents an immersive documentary that explores the elemental phenomenon of sound and its power to bend time, cross borders, and profoundly shape our perception of the world around us. The film experience will be followed by a bowed-cymbol soundbath performed by Matt Samolis and Thadd Comstock.
32 SOUNDS (2022, dir. by Sam Green, 97 mins). An immersive, amusing, and moving journey through 32 soundscapes by filmmaker Sam Green (The Weather Underground, A Thousand Thoughts) in collaboration with electronic musician JD Samson (Le Tigre). Green samples sounds inside the womb, the mating call of a now-extinct bird, the audio effects created by a Hollywood Foley artist, the hush of snow falling in Japan, and John Cage’s famed piece, “4:33.” Experimental musician Annea Lockwood (her Piano Burning performance captured the sounds of a piano on fire) suggests — as she records “wild” sounds from a marsh — that we should be listening with the environment, rather than to it.

ABOUT THE SOUNDBATH:
Matt Samolis returns to Epsilon Spires joined by Thadd Comstock to offer an experience of sonic immersion after the film for the purpose of relaxation and reflection. Matt’s method of practice effectively blends the harmonic and drone traditions, and is entirely acoustic. The sound created by his assemblage of bowed cymbals and tuned steel rods create a sound environment that is meditative and timeless, inviting the listener toward a stillness that is calming and rejuvenating.
