Head Start Arts Integration

Head Start Arts Integration Grants fund partnerships between local arts organizations or other nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status and Head Start agencies to support teacher and student learning in early arts education. Expert teaching artists mentor classroom teachers on how to integrate the arts into a curriculum in order to achieve social and learning objectives and foster creativity in Head Start schools.

Examples of fundable projects include:

  • a collaboration between teaching artists and educators to facilitate new arts experiences for Head Start students. This could include using clay to teach geometry and math concepts, music to tell stories and act out plays, and sound to provide children with tools for healing

  • an artist-in-residence program to build collaborative arts integration lessons between teaching artists and classroom teachers—combining music, dance, theater, and visual arts instruction with literacy and dramatic play

  • a partnership between a teaching artist and classroom teachers to deliver arts integration lessons such as using movement and music to teach math concepts or using theater arts, visual arts, and movement to teach destinations and geography concepts
