Picasso at the Lapin Agile

Picasso at the Lapin Agile
Description:

Picasso at the Lapin Agile - The Perfect Fix for Winter Doldrums

Looking for a reason to come out of hibernation? Ready for an infusion of warm intellect with a provocative dose of humor? Wipe the winter gloom away, and come out to the Town Hall Theater February 8-11 to see the Middlebury Community Players' presentation of Picasso at the Lapin Agile.

Steve Martin's play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, is a clever and humorous take on a chance meeting and witty repartee between Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein. There will be a cash bar at each performance with a limited number of café table seats available. Tickets are $12 for opening night, Thursday, February 8 at 7:30pm, and $17 for all other shows Feb. 9-10 at 7:30pm and Feb. 11 at 2:00pm (plus $1 THT preservation fee on Feb. 8 and $2 fee Feb. 9-11). Tickets are on sale through the Town Hall Theater Box Office at townhalltheater.org, or in person at 68 South Pleasant Street, Middlebury (802-382-9222) Monday-Saturday, noon to 5:00pm, or at the door starting one hour before show times.

About the play... It is 1904, in Paris, France. The Lapin Agile (Nimble Rabbit), quaint watering hole to struggling artists and would-be geniuses, welcomes two soon-to-be legends for one extraordinary night. Picasso and Einstein, whose egos match their intellects, spar with the regulars and each other about art, science, inspiration, love, and the promise of the 20th century. Throw in a mysterious visitor who makes the ladies swoon, and you're in for a well-rounded theater experience.

Equally smart and silly, Picasso at the Lapin Agile asks serious questions about art, science, and genius while it cracks goofy jokes about history, romance, and how to bake a pie in the shape of the letter e. It was Steve Martin's first full-length play; at the debut reading in Martin's Beverly Hills home, Tom Hanks read the role of Picasso and Chris Sarandon read the role of Einstein. The 1995 production in New York City won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play.
