Description:

The Gallery at River Arts Presents:
ĺsland í Maí: Iceland in May
Opening Reception Thursday, October 26th, 5-7pm

The Gallery at River Arts is pleased to present, “ĺsland í Maí: Iceland in May,” an exhibit of work by Vermont based artist Liz Nelson, on view October 26 - December 29, 2017.

After a short visit to Iceland, Nelson felt “an irresistible magnetic pull.” Captivated by the geography and geology shaped by volcanic activity, erosion, and wind, Nelson describes the island as one of isolation and change. The earth underneath is continually disrupted, the air is a tumult of wind, clouds, smoke, rain and snow. There is no prevailing wind; it comes from around the world in every direction. Active volcanoes, bright green valleys, glacier-cut fjords, black sand beaches, and roaring rivers are the most distinctive features of the Icelandic landscape. And although they are very accessible, they still remain virtually untouched by human civilization.

Nelson returned for a month long Arts Residency with SĺM (the Association of Icelandic Artists), an organization that supports a cultural exchange of visual artists with all countries of the world. These paintings are the result of that experience.

Elizabeth Nelson has exhibited in shows throughout Vermont and New England as well as in juried shows in Wisconsin, New York, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Her work was featured prominently in the recent “Art of Vermont” exhibit which toured statewide, and is in many private collections, including those of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tanglewood, The Federal Reserve in Boston, Cobella Design in Portland, Oregon, and Jay Peak Resort. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, and a Masters of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Cindy Griffith "Magic in the Landscape"

Description:

The Common Space Gallery at River Arts Presents:
Magic in the Landscape
Opening Reception Thursday, October 26th, 5-7pm

River Arts Center, 74 Pleasant Street, Morrisville, VT

Magic in the Landscape, an exhibition of work by Cindy Griffith, will be on exhibit in The Common Space Gallery at River Arts October 26 through December 29, 2017.

Inspired by nature, Griffith’s work is characterized by amplified colors and textures creating a magical-realism effect in her representational art. Playing with light and dark, warm and cool, in subjects such as forest shadows, mountain sun, fields, trees and a variety of landscapes, she captures special vignettes, allowing the viewer to share those joyful and intimate moments in nature.

Painting in her studio under the watchful eye of Hunger Mountain, Griffith works from reference photos or painting en plein air for a more three-dimensional experience in the warmer months. Being born and raised in Vermont contributed to becoming an artist of nature. Her training began early at the hands (and brush) of her father, Artist Leon Griffith, who imparted a respect and appreciation for nature in addition to a love of art.

Griffith has been juried into many exhibits throughout New England, including the Southern Vermont Art Center, The Art Complex Museum in Duxbury, MA, Art in the Round Barn, the Bryan Memorial Gallery, Studio Place Arts, the Vermont Governor’s Office, Chaffee Art Center, Gruppe Gallery, T.W. Wood Art Gallery, and many others. She’s been selected to be an Artist in Residence for the Appalachian Mountain Club, Crawford Notch, NH. She teaches pastel painting classes in Central Vermont as well as teaching privately.

Join River Arts in celebrating Cindy Griffith’s work on Thursday, October 26th, from 5-7pm for the Opening Reception.
