Raise Your Voice!
Description:

WonderArts, in partnership with the Hazen Union student group Stand-Up, presents the third annual “Raise Your Voice!” event on Friday, February 9, 6:30 PM - 9 PM at Heartbeet Lifesharing in Hardwick. Join us for an evening of poetry, music, rap, stories, and dance dedicated to social justice.

Featuring: Bobby Farlice Rubio of Trittium Well, local poets and musicians, and Hazen Union student performers. This event is organized by the Hazen Union-based program Stand-Up, for social justice. All donations will go to support their work towards raising awareness and tolerance through education. The evening will highlight Hazen Union students and the many different cultures within the Hardwick community. The night will end with refreshments and a dance party. This event is open to the public and is supported the Samara Fund.

Internationally and nationally acclaimed Toby Walker brings his talents to Rutland VT on Friday February 9th at the UU Church 117 West Street. Walker has been hailed as an award winning, roots music fingerstyle guitar virtuoso and songwriter who has toured the US, the United Kingdom, and all through Europe. Blending the styles of blues, ragtime, country, bluegrass, old-time jazz and rock, Walker has a style of his own and as such received numerous awards, including being the 1st place recipient of the International Blues Challenge Award in Memphis and the NY Music Award for best instrumental CD. Paul Asbell

Description:

Paul Asbell began playing at age 12 on an acoustic guitar that his father had “broken in” backing pro-labor “people’s songs” at union rallies in the 1940s. Entirely self-taught, Paul’s earliest musical inspiration was drawn from his dad’s records by the likes of Lightnin’ Hopkins, Leadbelly, Uncle Dave Macon, and Jimmy Driftwood. Paul’s three solo acoustic CDs have received rave reviews in the national media for their fresh takes on blues and jazz standards, old-timey country tunes, and original compositions drawn from the “American roots” tradition.

Description:

VCFA welcomes the MFA in Music Composition program to campus February 4-10. Multiple concerts and events featuring music written by VCFA students and performed by world-class musicians fill the week. All events are open—and free of charge—to the public. Four different ensembles will premiere pieces written by MFA in Music Composition students that reflect a widely versatile cross-section of approaches to new music. All concerts are in the College Hall Chapel.

Wednesday, Feb. 7, 8 p.m.: Anna’s Ghost and the Piano Trio
Thursday, Feb. 8, 8 p.m.: the Piano Trio and the Saxophone Quartet
Friday, Feb. 9, 3 p.m.: the Saxophone Quartet and Counterpoint Quartet
Saturday, Feb. 10, 3 p.m.: Counterpoint Quartet
